Comparative Analysis of Bacterial Colonization on Chromic and Polyglycolic Acid Sutures in Oral Surgery for Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Background: Sutures aid in tissue repair and surgical success by supporting wound closure; however, infections often occur near incision lines, particularly around suture areas. The aim of this study was to compare the bacterial colonization rates of chromic and Polyglycolic Acid sutures in the context of oral surgery.
Materials & Methods: In this experimental laboratory study, 56 patients aged 17 to 20 years undergoing surgical extraction of fully impacted wisdom teeth were selected. Patients were non-smokers without systemic or oral diseases and were not taking anti-inflammatory drugs. Two teeth per patient were randomly assigned to receive either Chromic Catgut or Polyglycolic Acid sutures. Postoperative care included antibiotics and pain relief. Sutures were removed after one week and cultured for bacterial analysis (α=0.05).
Results: Polyglycolic Acid sutures exhibited significantly lower bacterial colonization compared to chromic sutures. Mean aerobic colony counts were 3.93 × 10^5 for Polyglycolic Acid versus 6.54 × 10^5 for chromic sutures (P = 0.00002). Anaerobic colony counts were 1.98 × 10^5 for Polyglycolic Acid versus 3.35 × 10^5 for chromic sutures (P = 0.003). Combined aerobic-anaerobic counts were 5.91 × 10^5 for Polyglycolic Acid versus 9.90 × 10^5 for chromic sutures (P =0.0001).
Conclusion: Polyglycolic Acid sutures are associated with significantly lower bacterial colonization compared to chromic sutures, suggesting they may be a preferable choice for minimizing infection risks in oral surgery for impacted wisdom teeth.
